This essay was written for the exhibition catalogue “Sobre a fotografia brasileira atual” of the exhibition with the same title that was organized in 1997 by the Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo. Shortly thereafter, it was exhibited at the Centro Cultural Lightin Rio de Janeiro. This drew attention to the importance of appropriation photography and to matters related to national and individual identity in contemporary Brazilian art production .
Tadeu Chiarelli is a curator and the current director of the Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo. He has also worked as a researcher and curator in the fields of photography and nineteenth- and twentieth-century Brazilian art. His work identified how art and photography are connected to the artistic world and its circuits, with an emphasis on social issues. He has played a fundamental role in the understanding and promotion of photography as key elements in Brazilian art production in recent decades.
