This text by the Cuban critic José Gómez Sicre evaluates the work of Luis Chacón (b. 1927), whom he believes to be an important artist of his time. He considers the work within both national and international contexts, deeming him as one of the Venezuelan artists whose work belongs to the avant-garde in printmaking. The critic argues that he goes beyond traditional boundaries with his “object-engravings,” exhibited in his series The Planets. This set of one-off prints was shown one month earlier at the Caracas Athenaeum, just after the Venezuelan artist commented to the press about his controversial break with traditional printmaking. (See the untitled article “Luis Chacón: ya no podemos hacer grabados con el criterio de hace 5 siglos,” published in El Nacional, Caracas, June 29, 1967, n.p.). Chacón proposes the concept that there is no need to produce runs of the same image; it is better to make a single print. In this way, the artist has adapted to the idea of the print as an “object,” as a unique work, but his “object-engraving" goes a step further. In fact, Chacón works the larger engraving, attaching to it various pieces of metal foil as well as small engraved plates so as to convey the idea that the larger engraving is itself an object, made up of different assembled, engraved pieces. That is why the series The Planets is presented, in his work, as a step in the artist’s transition from two-dimensional to three-dimensional work.
Gómez Sicre’s text offers us a contemporary view of that event; the critic also describes the "object-engravings.” Moreover, the fact that this was an individual exhibition at the Pan-American Union was highly important; it represented an acknowledgment of Chacón’s explorations. His exhibition was backed by a continental institution, based in the capital of the United States, and by the Visual Arts Division of the Pan-American Union (directed by Gómez Sicre).
