The text describes the Galería del Centro Cultural Ricardo Rojas as a “a mental place that presents the art that tunes in exactly with the current times,” mentioning that, “in spite of having a joke of a budget, the Rojas space became a conspicuous facility.” He adds that since July 1989, it has been directed by Gumier-Maier—with the help of Magdalena Jitrik, who first grasps what the “critics and artistic consultants” later discovered. It highlights the “selection of artists for…[this] fringe and uncomfortable space…which constitutes] a continuation of his job as painter by other means.” Lastly, Lebenglik maintains that the importance of showing the Galería del Rojas in the Centro Cultural Recoleta implies “a way of helping and defending the few public places that remain and which bet on what is new and different.”

The Centro Cultural Ricardo Rojas, founded in 1984, is a cultural extension of the Universidad de Buenos Aires in which various activities developed, such as courses, conferences, films series etc. A few years after it opened in 1989, the Galería del Centro Cultural Ricardo Rojas was created in the university campus’s entrance hall, and was directed by artist and art critic Jorge Gumier Maier. Shortly thereafter Magdalena Jitrik joined in as an assistant.

La Galería del Rojas, an emerging space between 1989 and 1991, began to acquire significant visibility within the art scene between 1991 and 1992. Many of the artists that had shown their work there, in several cases for the first time, began to be included into the “consecrated” circuit of exhibition spaces, which included the ICI (Instituto de Cooperación Iberoamericana), the Centro Cultural de España, and the Galería Ruth Benzacar.

The reference to poetics of the past, such as Pop art, minimalism, Concrete art (under extremely personal reformulations), besides elements of kitsch, have helped to characterize the resources of expression of such artists. Toward the end of the decade, the artists who made up “el grupo del Rojas” were grouped, in a generic manner, as the representatives of the “1990s Argentinean art.”

El Rojas presenta: Algunos Artistas (Buenos Aires, Centro Cultural Recoleta, from August 26 to September 6,1992). As the title of the show suggests, it is meant as a presentation—on an “institutional” level—of the Galería del Rojas.
