Jorge de la Vega (1930-71) was born and died in Buenos Aires. He was a self-taught painter, printmaker, poet, guitarist, illustrator, artisan, and advertising creative man. In 1961, he formed the Otra Figuración [Other Figuration] group—which was also known as Nueva Figuración [New Figuration] — with Rómulo Macció, Luis Felipe Noé, and Ernesto Deira. French artist Germaine Derbecq was married to Pablo Curatella Manes. She served as an art critic, particularly for Le Quotidiene [The Daily] newspaper; she founded Artinf magazine with Silvia de Ambrosini and Odile Baron Supervielle, becoming a great promoter of the arts, organizing many exhibitions. For the first three years after it opened in 1960, Derbecq herself was consulting for the Galería Lirolay, owned by Mr. and Mrs. Fano, a French couple of Jewish birth. Because young artists were being selected and promoted there every two weeks, the gallery developed a name for spotting new forms of artistic expression, opening its space to many budding artists who held their first solo shows within those walls. This document explores emerging visual arts of the period, the ones that were not yet swept up by the institutional circuit in Argentina.
