In this article, Tomás Maldonado advocates a form of creative expression that focuses on the design and production of objects intended for daily use. He maintained this same approach in the editorial slant of nueva vision (“New Vision”), the magazine that he published from December 1951 until 1957.

The Editorial Board ofBoletín 2 del Centro de Estudiantes de Arquitectura [Bulletin # 2 of the Center for Students of Architecture], included Juan Manuel Borthagaray (1928), Gerardo Clusellas, Carlos Méndez Mosquera (1930), and Pino Sívori. The magazine’s design, created by Tomás Maldonado, is an early example of the influence that graphic arts from Milan exerted in Argentine circles. This second issue, which was so very different from the first one as regards the design, was unequaled during that period. Tomás Maldonado is an intellectual, a painter, and a designer, who was born in Buenos Aires in 1922. In 1945, he helped found the painter’s movement known as the Arte Concreto — Invención [Concrete Art and Invention] Association. In 1954, Maldonado went to Ulm, Germany, to take up the position of professor at the Hochschule für Gestaltung [School of Advanced Studies in Form], where he eventually became the Director. Attention is drawn to the very end of the article, where it says: “Excerpt from the work in progress titled, “Elements of a New Vision”. This particular document has been chosen because it shows that avant-garde Concrete art practitioners were interested in the development of design and, in the case of the author, it confirms his early interest in the ideas he was working on while at the design school in Ulm.
