The editorial refers to the provisional loss of liberty undergone by the journalists and Revista de avance editors José Z. Tallet (1893–1989) and Martí Casanovas (1894–1966). Government officials had detained the intellectuals based on accusations that they were involved in communist activities that were in opposition to the Machado government. In the following issues, the editors offer more details on these events. The print erroneously attributed to the Cuban painter Carlos Enríquez (1900–57) was in fact a work by the Mexican Fernando Leal Ortiz (1896–1964). Along with Diego Rivera and David Alfaro Siqueiros, Leal Ortiz was one of the main representatives of the Mexican muralist movement. As a painter, printmaker, and caricaturist, Leal Ortiz contributed various drawings and prints to a number of publications of the period, such as the daily newspaper El País in Mexico. He was a member of a group of intellectuals led by José Vasconcelos that promoted the creation of a new Mexican identity. Since there was no information about (Hernández) Leal, it was considered a printing error.
