The historian and critic Juan Carlos Palenzuela (1954?2007) writes a negative review of Una poética: lo versátil, the exhibition of works by the Venezuelan visual artist Luis Guevara Moreno (1926?2010) presented at the GAN (Galería de Arte Nacional) in 1982. The critic sees references to works by Alejandro Otero, Jesús Rafael Soto, Carlos Cruz-Diez, and Jacobo Borges, among others. Palenzuela includes historical details that allow him to make chronological connections between some of the works. He also discusses the stylistic references associated with the period that he sees in Guevara Moreno’s paintings.
This article is interesting because it includes opinions expressed at the time of the exhibition. Though harsh, Palenzuela’s opinion is based on his previous knowledge of Guevara Moreno’s work and the Venezuelan visual arts at that time. This knowledge leads him to critique the exhibition in general and the artist’s works in particular. In the critic’s opinion, the choice of works is not particularly inspired since they lack significance and are excessively conventional.
Together with the journalist Lenelina Delgado’s interview—see “Con Luis Guevara Moreno,” El Universal, September 8, 1982 in the ICAA digital archive (doc. no. 1154411)— this article is another essential source that contributes to a more objective assessment of the exhibition and the collection of works involved.
