The text by Fernando Cerqueira Lemos on the exhibition Múltiplos e objetos questions from the beginning the “democratic” nature of the multiples, starting in the title of the article and continuing with the loaded questions addressed to the participating artists. The critic considered the prices of items sold at the exhibition to be “expensive,” pointing out that the serialization did not “lower” the cost of production. The text even claims that public participation in the work represented more an idea of a “cultural democracy” rather than the sale of objects in a series. At the same time, the artist statements that Cerqueira Lemos includes contradict the idea of “democratization” either by way of multiples or by the concept of “participation.” Nelson Leirner states that “non-participation could be a conduct as democratic as participation.” Carmela Gross, in turn, is convinced that “social conscience of the artistic language cannot be reduced to its means,” whether they are multiples, objects or paintings. In addition to the aforementioned artists, also participating in the exhibition were Newton Mesquita, Marília Kranz, Vasco Prado, Marcia Barroso do Amaral, Carmem Bardy, Alberto Cidraes, Paulo Roberto Leal, Lúcia Fleury, Inge Roesler, Manuel Matos, Franklin, Moshe Gorban, Norma Grinberg, Dolly Moreno, Calabrone, Anita Kaufmann, and Antonio Peticov.
