The document Estados Alternados: Relaciones entre Ciencias, Las Artes y Música [Altered States: Relationships between Science, the Arts, and Music] can be viewed as the manifesto of the sound artist and electro-acoustic composer [see “The Choice of Electro-Acoustics in Colombia,” doc. # 1098721] Juan Reyes (b. 1962). He discusses relationships in terms of the changeable role of the artist, focusing initially on the visual arts and on the need for a creative process within the artistic practice. This process, according to the artist, is nourished by a constant dialogue with languages from other disciplines, such as the exact sciences. In the composer’s opinion, all creative processes begin with a need for expression; that is, a questioning that seeks to understand the relationship between the initial moment of creation and the ultimate goal of the work—its exposure to the public.
Reyes explains artistic creation from the trans-disciplinary perspective of a sound artist who is also a musician and a mathematician, who seeks to explore the relationships between art and technology without losing sight of the influence of a changing historical context, which makes his a valuable contribution. He operates from a hybrid perspective that is constantly searching for the development of creative tools that, somehow, correspond to the “contemporary nature” of art. Also of interest in this field are other Colombian artists such as Mauricio Bejarano (b.1955), Ricardo Arias (b. 1965), and Daniel Prieto (b. 1978), among others, because of their ongoing interest in the exploration of sound as an expressive realm for the visual arts.
