This brief description of Acción divisoria del espacio, the performance project staged by the artists Yeni [Jennifer Hackshaw] (b. 1948) and Nan [María Luisa González] (b. 1956), documents this Venezuelan conceptual art event, spotlighting local non objectual art through the work of these two artists who were known for their conceptual experiments in the 1980s. Acción divisoria del espacio was presented in the exhibition space at the federal district government building. It was also included in “Acciones frente a la Plaza” (Caracas, 1981), the event coordinated by Marco Antonio Ettedgui, and was subsequently performed at the Museo de Arte Moderno de Medellín (Colombia) during the “Coloquio de arte no objetual” event that was staged that same year.
Hackshaw and González worked together as “Yeni and Nan” from 1978 through 1986, creating presentations, performances, and multimedia installations, including Presencias and Arte artista at the Galería de Arte Nacional (1980); Integraciones en el agua at the Bienal de São Paulo (1981); and Simbolismo de la cristalización: hombre-sal II at the Museo de Arte La Rinconada (Caracas, 1985). In their work, Yeni and Nan sought to express the concept of female identity, maternity, and individuality, using their bodies as the main vehicle for their artistic-somatic message.
