Ever since it was founded, the CAYC (Centro de Arte y Comunicación), helmed by the cultural promoter, artist, and businessman Jorge Glusberg, was intended as an interdisciplinary space where an experimental art movement could flourish. The establishment of collaborative networks connecting local and international artists and critics played an important role in this process. In addition to the exhibitions, a program of different activities exposed attendees to the latest in scientific thinking. According to Glusberg, the coordination between theoretical thinking and artistic practice was an essential part of social change.
This newsletter announces a roundtable discussion, “Comunicación y psicoanálisis” [Communication and Psychoanalysis] as part of the “Primer Coloquio Latinoamericano de la Comunicación” [First Latin American Symposium on Communication] (GT-569; doc. no. 1478992, GT-572; doc. no. 1478994). Participants included noted figures in the field of human and social sciences, such as Mauricio Abadie, Néstor García Canclini, Eduardo Kalina, David Rosenfeld, Raúl Sciarreta, and Ernesto Warnes. The event was coordinated by Dr. Carlos Paz. Some of these luminaries had already taken part in the activities offered by the CAYC’s Escuela de Altos Estudios [School of Advanced Studies] (GT- 188; doc. no. 1478743, GT-472; doc. no. 1479001, GT-555; doc. no. 1478958, GT-487; doc. no. 1478877 [pending]). They all shared an interest in the new Marxist theories, in psychoanalysis, and in the various political perspectives that explored how the country might change after being oppressed by constant military dictatorships.
The Center used this event to demonstrate what the new social theories might do for artistic activity, especially those that supported the CAYC’s program of events and the creation of an institutional poetics of its own that would give it a regional identity.
